Minor intervals are always one semitone smaller than the major interval with the same number. Intervals are based on the harmonic minor scale, or the melodic minor scale. Don't forget that this means the 6th and 7th degrees of the scale are sometimes raised by a semitone (half step)! Highly Recommended – Do Ear Training Grade 1 and Music Theory Grade 1. A lot of people don’t like doing these, but I promise they’re worth your time and effort, especially in these early stages! But you don't HAVE to do them, they're just recommended. Most Importantly – Be forgiving and kind to yourself! This is a FUN journey!

Many people believe that only “gifted people” are qualified for ear training, that without some sort of innate auditory ability, one should limit one’s self to only reading written music.

Ear Training pages are incorporated throughout the book, providing the listening tools and opportunities needed to put recently learned theory into practice. Listening examples and exercises accompany each of these pages, and are accessible for free to students and teachers through the Kjos Multimedia Library at The History section of Book One broadens students’ understanding.
